Summer of 1977 Germany 240 words
Prompt: "It was the first sunny day in weeks."
Summer of 1977 living in Germany. West Germany to be exact. Because this was before the wall fell.
Walking from my barracks to the combined supply rooms and S-4 for the battalion I searched for any sign that today would be different. The calendar said fall already? What? We missed summer somewhere. I'm from Texas where summer is straight days of 100 plus degrees broiling sunshine. Lake, river, pool, the beach if you're far enough south.
Except I was in Germany. Checked the calendar again. Yes. September has slid in behind the holidays of 1976-1977. Oh wait. There it is. Oh wait no. That's just the lights from the helicopter overhead.
The day ended the same way it began rainy, cold, dark, dreary. Why did I volunteer to do a tour here? Oh right, I wanted to see Europe.
Morning arrived two weeks later. Oh man it's bright out here today. Look. It was the first sunny day in weeks! Let me grab some suntan oil. My skin's so pale it'll crisp up like bacon. Grabbing the sunshades, I ran back to my room. Grabbing a pair of shorts, a skimpy top, and my book. I headed for the balcony to lay out and regenerate my inner cells. That sun felt so good.
Oh no! The sky grew dark. Clouds covered my beloved sun. Rain returned to fall on my tan.
