A night anxiety snuck up on me.
A Breathe Away

I had an episode,
as my body shook and
my blood turned to liquid fire.

Breath gasping,
heart thundering,
pain inducing,

I asked if we could talk,
praying that I wasn’t acting a fool,
begging God for kept promises,
that you could offer a respite.

My fingernails dug into soft skin as
you told me you were with friends,
bored and uncaring.

I understand my friend,
for what is one worth
when there’s ten?

So I gave in,
whispering apologies,
and hung up.
