Safety

Mike stood on the ridge. “Come on. Think with the brain the good Lord gave you,” he mumbled, then gazed off into the barren landscape.

Suddenly Jack appeared. “Here’s the plan. We run like mad over to the fort, to safety.” Jack sped off.

Mike took out a pen, then a notebook from the battered pack. He opened the notebook and began to write.

Soon Jack came running back. “What? Are - you - coming?”asked Jack, out of breath. He bent over and grabbed his ankles.

“I have to write. In a minute.” Mike scribbled in a notebook. Minutes went by and he still scribbled. Jack stood upright and fidgeted.

“What are you writing? We gotta go.” Jack tugged on Mike’s arm.

“I’m writing for the future, Jack. For the future. So they’ll know,” Scribble, scribble. “Why this all happened. Why we ran.” Then Mike put his notebook away in the battered and his pen behind his ear.

Jack and Mike exchanged glances. They turned, ran toward the barren landscape. They ran to the safety of the fort.
