A Hurricane Katrina evacuee held a cardboard sign on an on-ramp to I-40.
North

Take me out of here,
Away from this destruction,
Away from storm surges,
And need of reconstruction.

Away from news' releases,
From reporters' prying mikes,
From community filled shelters
And unfair price hikes.

Away from FEMA supply trucks
Stalled in busy parking lots,
From downed trees and power lines,
In electric-idles spots.

From food bank shortages
And empty grocery shelves,
From non-functional traffic lights,
From those blaming themselves.

Please, oh please, take me north.
Show me the road away from here
To a place away, far away.
Steer north, my friend, steer.
