Theory of Rain

I stopped the car. Someone dressed all in purple was standing in the middle of the street. This person then walked up to my open car window.

The person said, “I live on Planet Xandar. Tell me why you have rain.”

“You live on the next block. I’ve seen you in the IGA.”

“Will you or won’t answer my question? The fate of the entire universe hinges on your response.”

“I’m going to call the cops, you freak, if you don’t go away.” I rolled up my window.

The person dressed all in purple backed away from the car. I drove home. The question stuck in my mind the rest of the day. ‘Why do you have rain?’

The next day I drove to the post office. When I got out of the car, the person in purple stopped me again.

“I live on Planet Xandar. Tell me why you have rain.” He grabbed my arm. “Will you answer my question? My people need an answer.”

“Go back to your planet. Tell your people we need rain to water our land. Tell them to bring you back.” I pulled my arm back and marched into the post office.

I pondered some questions all day. Where was Planet Xandar? Had I really seen this man before yesterday? Did we really need rain?

I was afraid to leave the house the next day, but had to get groceries. The man in purple was outside with a spaceship.

“You are coming to Planet Xandar to teach us.” He looked into my eyes, then took me by the arm and led me aboard.

The planet is not so bad. My class about rain has quite a few students. Today’s lesson is all about water existing in gaseous, liquid, and solid states.
