The first poem I’ve written about love.
She was grace
in spirit, essence and life.
She enriched the lives she touched
with strength, laughter and light.
And for me, also fear and sorrow,
for circumstance
that had us both broken before we ever had a chance.

Loving her was more harrowing than I could have imagined.
Her ever-present love
had me mystified,
terrified.
She leaned in and whispered beautiful things
I’d been waiting to hear her say
and all I knew to do was close my eyes
and fly far, far away.

Its true I’d been content with loneliness for a while
but nothing in this world made me higher
than her bewitching smile as she held me close
and stole my breath away.
If there was a chance at forever by her side,
I can’t be all in with one foot outside.

So I dive into the angry sea
to free the shark inside of me.
I surrender anger to vulnerability.
Now I spend my nights watching her sleep,
waking up tangled beneath my sheets.
She even does silence beautifully.
