The Discrepancy

Mr. Daniels looked down at the ledger book Randel had laid on his desk. Randel watched as his finger stopped at the line that started the inconsistencies and then slowly moved on. Mr. Daniels stared for several minutes longer before he spoke.

“Does anyone else know about this?” he asked, quietly.

“No sir,” Randel said, “I brought it to you first. I wasn’t sure who to trust, being fairly new here. I thought you would be in a better position to know what to do to fix this without hurting the company.”

Mr. Daniels looked up at Randel, “Thank you. I can’t tell you how much that means to me. This company has come down through my family for four generations now. The last thing I want is for it to have to go through a scandal on my watch. I will take care of this.”

“Thank you, Sir. What cn I do to help?”

“Right now, nothing, but thank you! Go back to your desk and continue with your other work as if nothing is amiss. I will let you know if there is anything else I need from you. With any luck, this will be settled by day’s end.”

“Yes, Sir.”

“And Randel?”

“Yes?”

“You will be rewarded for this, I promise,” and he smiled.

Randel smiled too, as he walked back to his office. He was still smiling when Mr. Daniel’s limo driver unexpectedly picked him up after work. He was still smiling as they sped out of town to “somewhere special.” A little less though, as they arrived at the deserted sand pit, and met up with the other guy, with the gun...

Mr. Daniels was still smiling though.
