what are the causes of homelessness in the community?
what are the causes of homeless in a community?
          Introduction
Homelessness is a big challenge of a community that experiencing every day. There might be a lot of reasons that people face being homeless. It is an issue throughout the world. In the united states homelessness remains a challenge for millions of people. For example, according to the 2019 department of housing and urban development survey, "more than 560, 000 people in the united states roughly 17 out of every 10, 000 people -were experienced homelessness on one January night" (congressional digest 2). This data shows a "12 percent reduction from 2007" (congressional). During this pandemic time, the number will increase because millions of people left jobless and they may not afford for rent and many other things. However, it is necessary to study and identify the possible causes that leads to homelessness. Homelessness can arise due to high housing price or high price of apartment rent, health problems, or domestic violence.
These problems can hugely affect one community in different ways. For instance, housing problem is a major issue in every community. Most of the people who suffer from affordable housing crisis are low income citizens who cannot sustainably maintain monthly rental payment. In addition to lower-income, rents for apartments and house are continuously increasing. According to national alliance to end homelessness, currently "8 million extremely low-income households pay at least half of their income toward housing, putting them at risk of housing instability and homelessness" (End homelessness.org). Therefore, to end homelessness and to create a relatively stable community shelter assistance is necessary. Connecting people who experience homelessness to housing and other services, such as working with governmental and non-governmental organizations to increase affordable housing or to create jobs for the unemployed homeless communities.
Not only affordable housing problem but also health problems can be a cause of homelessness in a community. These health problems can be life threatening chronic diseases that makes an individual helpless or mental disorders od disabilities. Infectious diseases, such as HIV/AIDS, sexual transmitted diseases, or pandemics and other mental problems can easily put one's life at risk for homelessness. In vice versa being homeless also increases the exposures for different health issues that leads to disability and other health issues. According to the united states department of housing and urban development, people living in shelters are more than twice as likely to have a disability compared to the general population on a given night in 2017 (Endhomelessness.org). Diseases conditions, including "diabetes, heart diseases, and HIV/AIDS are found at high rates among the homeless population, sometimes 3 to 6 times higher than that of the general population" (Endhomelessness.org). To build a healthy community, the government should design health policies for the homeless people to access affordable health care, and different services that enables homeless people get prescriptions at low cost or free.
The last but not the least possible cause of homelessness is domestic violence. It is considered as an "immediate cause of homelessness" (Endhomelessness.org). People become homeless from an abusive relationship within a family, or in a community. Families, single adults, youths, or children are commonly at-risk of domestic violence. These people need immediate safety and shelter, or long-term services that help them cope with the physical or mental trauma that they experienced from the violence, such as rehabilitation services, psychological treatment, or food security.
In general, homelessness could be caused by housing problems, different health and disability issues, or increased domestic violence. Low-income and poor citizens are greatly exposed to continuous house or apartment rent increment and are most likely become homeless. Health problems like HIV/AIDS, diabetes, heart problems, disability, or other mental problems are another main cause of homelessness in a community. Domestic violence is an immediate cause for homelessness, which is likely used as an escaping way from unanticipated physical or psychological trauma secondary to violence. Therefore, homeless people need to be supported to create a better community and a better world now and for the future generations to come.
