Down on her luck, and being tempted by the devil himself, Sierra must solve mysteries.
You shot that guy without any hesitation Reynolds. I am finally gonna see you pay for lack of discipline.” The captain screamed at me. “You have been so lucky so far. I am gonna get to see you kicked off the force for this. You know that Nevan McGrath is dead because of you don’t you?”
“Captain, he had ripped out the throat of one victim and was sucking blood out of another victim’s neck. What the hell was I supposed to do? Let him kill another human being? Mr. McGrath was not human.” I shouted back just to be heard.
“Listen to me Reynolds, you are so outta here, and I just don’t know which charge to throw at you.”
“Why not throw them all at me? At least that way you can be sure that one of them sticks.”
“This is what I’m talking about; you are such a pain in the ass. Nobody in their right mind would want to deal with you. As of this moment you are relieved of duty, that is of course unless you want to resign? He made the last a hopeful question.
“Like I would give you the satisfaction of resigning. Besides I get paid administrative leave until I’m fired or convicted you piece of shit. So why don’t you go outside and play hide and go fuck yourself Captain.” I smiled and turned on my heel and walked to the door. At the door I turned back and said, “I take it I’m relieved of duty until further notice?” Then I left and slammed the door behind me.
When I got past the infamous water cooler I got slapped on the back by a detective named James Webber.
“Way to go Reynolds.” He confided, “I wish I could tell the captain something like that. The rap he gave you is a bad one. We all know you didn’t have any choice but to kill that asshole McGrath. He would have killed you next.”
“I broke the rules Webber we all know what happens when we don’t follow protocol.” I stated, starting to get grumpy. “Listen that guy McGrath, he wasn’t right.”
“Whatcha mean?”
“I mean, you are gonna think I’m crazy but I think he was a vampire.”
“Right Reynolds, right. That’s a bunch of bullshit and you know it.”
“Forget it, forget I said anything, it’s just that….”
“What?”
“See you around.”
“Sierra.” He paused, “Take care and watch your back okay?”
“I can do that probably better than you can.” I said with a frown between my eyes.
As I walked to my desk to gather my things, I had a sense of loss, I do not think I’m gonna come back this time. Something about this case is sitting bad in my gut. I could feel my headache getting worse and that also was not a good sign.
“What the fuck am I gonna do now.” I whispered to myself. As I gathered up my coffee cup and other miscellaneous personal belongings. I put my badge and police issue firearm in my desk and walked out the front door of the Santa Fe Police Department.
Heading to my car I thought about what had happened and what I had said to Detective Webber was how I truly felt. Now I was a Christian and the thought of Vampires being real just went against the grain, but a gut feeling is a gut feeling and I don’t think that Nevan McGrath is truly dead. Okay let me rephrase that, I don’t think he will stay dead.

CHAPTER ONE

Same shit different day, different year.

Being a P.I. just doesn’t pay off like being a cop did. It has been three years since I shot Nevan McGrath and I was forced to resign, but at least I didn’t get put in prison. My resignation from the sheriff’s office was kinda like a dishonorable discharge from the military. The only reason I wasn’t put away was the fact that the coroner’s office misplaced the body. Right.
That fucking corpse got up and walked away, I’m sure of it. I don’t really have time to investigate the case right now, I’m doing to many other cases at the moment.
My name is Sierra Reynolds, ex-cop and currant private investigator. Being a private dick isn’t my idea of a great job but being how the Marines didn’t work out and being a cop sure as hell didn’t work out, this is what is left for me, inside the law of course. I was one of the first women admitted into Marine Force Recon, The best of the best baby. Then, not doing so well with authority I didn’t re-up my commission and became a police officer in Santa Fe, New Mexico. No you don’t need a passport to get there. New Mexico is that big space between Colorado and the Mexican border. I had no desire to being a spook, or a hit man, or would that be hit woman? So this is what was left.
I’m currently working on a missing person case. The local cops, whom I knew, said it was a runaway, the parents didn’t buy it and neither do I. I might as well mention the fact that since I quit the police force vampires have proven to exist and right now in congress is a bill that will give them rights as a legal citizen. I lost my dream job because of the walking corpses, I voted no on my state ballot. Maybe the only reason that they are even getting this much attention is because the newly elected President’s daughter was turned about one year after his election. By turned I mean that she was killed and then brought back by a vampire. The same vampire to be exact.
Since she was turned and came out with her master’s blessing there have been many academic papers and thousands of news interviews on the vampire legend. It seems that vampires have existed for thousands of years and one professor of mythological science has been able to interview the President’s daughter’s master. It seems the French have known for hundreds of years that vampires exist. Hence the explanation for the guillotine. Anyway, present day France disavows any knowledge of the existence of vampires.
Back to the current case, I believe that the missing eighteen-year-old boy has been turned into a vampire and is in a sense still alive. I also suspect that the bane of my career is the master for this boy.
I say boy, not because I am so much older, I say boy because when I was eighteen, I was still a little girl. I didn’t act like one, thought that I knew everything, and thought I was ten foot tall and bullet proof. My drill sergeant saw to it that the last was not true. When I started to kill people for my country, I knew that I was nothing but a child trapped in a marine’s body.
It is hard not to remember that the military took a piece of my soul when they had me kill my first terrorist. Not that I thought a fifteen-year-old boy was capably but they said go and I did. I’ve never forgiven myself for that kill, which by the way was legal, but the numerous kills I’ve had since then have no memories in my brain. The part of my brain that says who made you judge, jury, and executioner.
