Tips for memorizing Scripture

1. Make a plan.

Make a plan like I did below.

2. Break it up into smaller tasks.

Try to memorize a little at a time like just one phase by repeating it over and over again until it sticks with you.

3. Write it down.

Use 3x5 index cards like flash cards. Write out the verse and carry it with you for quick review. Writing it out is also good for those who learn by action.

4. Repetition is key.

As you read it over and over or say it over and over, it will become more and more familiar to you.

5. Keep it in front of your eyes.

By having it written on an index card or piece of paper, you can place it where it is visible as you go about your day.

6. Think about it.

Think about the scripture and about what it means to you. While you are washing dishes, mowing the lawn, vacuuming, doing laundry, and going about doing things that don't take your full concentration, repeat parts of the verse out loud or quietly to yourself. This way you can work on memorizing Scripture while you go about doing other things or your daily tasks especially if you have a busy schedule. Some people have memorized entire chapters this way.

Not everyone memories at the same pace. Some struggle more than others. Even if we don't have the ability to memorize the scriptures word for word, we can at least become familiar with and have a general idea of what they say. Below, I made a scripture memory plan for myself. You are welcome to memorize this with me or make your own plan. I hope to do new Scripture passages each week. Let me know if you are doing the plans with me, and how you are doing.

Week of 3/29 Scripture memory plan: Ephesians 6:10-18

Ephesians 6:10-18
10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.
11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;
15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;
