Did you forget?
“What are you doing?” I asked. Did he forget?
“What does it look like, packing!” Micheal responded with excitement. I watched him in awe. I was hurt. How could my older brother forget.
“But -” I began. I stopped. Everyone forgot today was my birthday.
I woke up this morning ready to enjoy my day. However, everyone else had other plans. My mom and dad had to work. My best friend, Elsa, had something to do with her boyfriend. Now, Michael was leaving.
I cleared my throat, trying not to sound disappointed.
“Where are you going?”
“Me and the guys are heading out! Camping! I would invite you but, you know, it's a guy thing.”
“Have fun.” I said.
I could feel the tears ready to roll down my face. Was I just a joke to everyone? Micheal gave me a hug and walked away. I was alone. I slowly walked to my room, sat at the edge of my bed and slowly began to sob.
“Where home!”
I heard my mom’s voice. It annoyed me! I refused to leave my room. There was a low tap on my door.
“Hey.”
It was dad. He walked in as I wiped the tears from my face.
“Come down stairs. Mom needs help with dinner.”
He did not even notice my distraught face.
I went to the kitchen.
“Happy Birthday!”
I looked up and gasped. Everyone remembered! It was a surprise party! Elsa held up a white cake with a lit candle. I smiled. I was happy.
“You really thought we forgot! April fools!” Dad said and hugged me. “Oh, and happy birthday!”
