For a brief moment every spring 4-12-2021

The Greening

In the hush of first dawning
when the spectrum changes from
black and white to muted color
there is just the merest hint.

As the sun clears the horizon,
as the world brightens
to a new day, then, then
can you see if you but look.

A blush of green, a tinge
as the greening takes its first
swallows of spring:
only lasts a day. If that.

It is over in a moment
for once the leaves swell
forth and the unfurling occurs,
it is over for another year.

But for that briefest space of time
across the forests, local roads,
neighborhoods, and yards are colored
by the promised tinge.

It is in that fleeting moment
the green tinge becomes the greening,
when hope is renewed and we
are shown that life, does indeed, go on.
