Contest, 300 words or less, that includes the words: painting, fish, bag
Moms put in a lot of time finding the perfect recipe, not that it was a special occasion, she just liked making special dishes sometimes. Curating all the ingredients like an artist preparing their canvas for painting she called out, “Honey, what time do you think he’ll be home tonight?” She asked that a lot lately ever since he turned seventeen and started driving everywhere. “I picked out a recipe he’s going to love.”, she beamed. Dad set the last bag from the grocery on the counter and looked carefully at his wife, who around this house was affectionately known as “Moms”.

Dad said, “He sure has become independent lately; I think it’s a good thing. Getting out of the house more, yah know?” Moms started chopping vegetables, “Oh yeah, I know I’m glad he’s learning to be independent as long as he’s responsible. Please put that fish in the freezer, for me.” Tears started rising up in Moms’ eyes, Dad noticed her working on a large onion. “Here let me help dear”, as he took over the vegetable cutting.

“Oh, the car!!! He’s home…” Dad was wiping down the countertops, when the door burst open and their son came into the kitchen plopping down a gym bag and some car keys. Everyone exchanged greetings and Mom piped in, “You got home so late dear, are you hungry?” Making his way up stairs their son said something inaudible that indicated he’d already eaten out with friends. Moms finished cooking then packed much of it away in the freezer, it was overflowing. Dad came over and noticed a tear rolling down Moms’ cheek as he looked up at her softly and said, “Is that onion still bothering you honey?” To which she replied, “I’m just glad he’s becoming independent.”
