The Book Fair

Jane burst in the house crying her eyes out. “I lost my money for the book fair!”

“Oh Honey, what happened?” Mom said, looking at the clock, Jane was now late for school too.

“I had it right in my shoe, safe!”

“In your shoe?”

“Yes because I didn’t have a deep enough pocket so I put it in my shoe so it would be safe!”

“Oh, good plan.”

“But then, I got a stone in my shoe and it was hurting my foot every time I took a step and I sat down next to Mr. Gregory’s house to take it out. Mr. Gregory was trimming his bushes out front.”

“Ok...”

Well his bushes have green leaves and my money was green and I forgot it was in my shoe and I dumped my shoe to get the stone out and the money flew out into the pile of leaves and got all mixed up! Mr. Gregory and I looked and looked for it but we couldn’t find it anywhere! Then he said he’d give me some money so I wouldn’t be late for school, but I didn’t think that would be OK with you so I came home.”

Mom looked at her very sad and very upset and very late for school daughter trying not to laugh.

“Jane,” she said, “the book fair isn’t till tomorrow, and I gave you four quarters not a dollar bill, so they weren’t green. And if Mr. Gregory wanted to lend you the dollar, I would have paid him back. We’ll have to thank him for the offer. Now we better get you to school, you’re late.”

“I’m late for school?” Jane said, shocked, and burst out crying again.

Mom sighed, it was going to be another long day with Jane.
