Taking life as a journey across a bridge. (from a prompt from The Poet's Place group)
The Bridge

At first I was crawling, unsteady and uncertain
towards an old man who waved to me
encouraging me onwards
across the bridge

My confidence growing steadier so did my legs
and I tottered forwards towards the grey haired man
who smiled encouragingly
and urged me onwards across the bridge

Realising my strength I strode forth confidentially
approaching the fine figure who
beckoned me and encouraged me
further across the bridge

Tiring a little I realised my eyes had deceived me
for a handsome man in his prime shouted
that I was nearly there , just a little further
onwards to his side of the bridge

Exhausted my steps faltering and failing I staggered
to the infant, laughing with childish glee
as I neared the end and saw that he was who I would be
as I crossed onwards over the next bridge.
