Sharp Wit


An insult issued with a laugh,
A slander with a chuckle,
Can slash a tender heart in half
Or make a spirit buckle.

A slight, a snub, a barb, a slur--
Though slathered well with humour--
Remains a vicious, prickly burr
As deadly as a tumour.

Many a true word said in jest,
In humour-hidden anger.
Many a friendship laid to rest
By laughter-laden rancour.
