The mental scars of war

I’ve not fought for my country,
But stories I've been told,
By those with a hollowness,
Deep in their hearts and souls.

Scars hidden, out of reach,
Sights they'll never share.
Loved ones stand beside them,
Without knowing how to care.

Never understanding
As they watch the darkness fall.
Not aware, those they love,
Are faced with cruel walls.

The barriers their minds have made
Within, keeps them secure.
Those who do not tell their tale
Have closed and locked the door.

Replaying scenes, no control,
Changing who they are.
Drifting on a wind of pain.
The cost paid for war.
