An old shadow has returned

An old shadow has returned
A black hand reaches for me
I wake up, heart beating fast
I am afraid

Wars loom, death and darkness,
The world snarls and bites
I thought that hope had banished fear
Now I am not so sure

I cannot sleep, it is strange
How things have changed so quickly
Maybe I have sinned?
Of what should I repent?

Why is this evil stalking me,
Unknown and silent in the night?
When did I become,
The target of the hunt?

AUTHOR NOTES: I have been watching the news a little too much. I woke up in the night my heart beating and with a fear I have not felt for many years. It was strange enough to inspire this poem and informed by watching the news nonstop for the last few days. The original poem had this verse also to end with but the contest only allows 16 lines:

I shall not fear the growing dark
I shall stand strong in my God
What troubles come will come
But I shall trust in Him
