Two friends break bread at Texas Roadhouse
Friends…Until the End
WC 289

We were eating dinner at Texas Roadhouse. My meal was mediocre, but I said nothing because my friend, Christine, had suggested the place.

I was sawing away on my well-done hunk of shoe leather when I realized she was staring at me. Well, maybe not at me, but in my direction.

I looked up; she appeared angry, her eyes slits. I glanced back to see if something was going on behind me.

Nope.

“Are you okay, Chris?”

“I’m fine,” she said, and the fugue state was broken. “Why do you ask?”

“Are you upset with me about something?” I couldn’t imagine what I’d done.

Christine liked to control; being a go-along-to-get-along kind of gal, that trait was always okay with me. Well, maybe not okay, but I could live with it because there were trade-offs, as in most relationships

“Should I be, Julie?” Now she was glaring.

Something snapped; she was reminding me of my ex-husband and that was not fun. I was beginning to realize that was possibly one of the initial attractions when we first met at the hair salon.

My furrowed brow changed her mood.

“So, after dinner, which movie do you wanna see?” she said in a perky tone.

She was waiting for me to say, “I don’t care. What do you think?”

“I think I’d rather you just drop me off at my house.”

“We had the evening planned, Julie.”

“Did we now? Well, I changed my mind! I’ve decided I want to go home!”

We drove along in silence.

As I was getting out of the car, she said, “You are too bossy. I don’t think we can be friends anymore!”

“Okey-dokey,” I said and exited her vehicle.

And that was that.
