Jumper lays an egg
Word Count - 264

The rabbit hutch stinks as Jeremy searches for places to hide his twin sisters’ Easter eggs. Their parents, after hiding three dozen eggs, two times, for a total of 72 hides, have gone inside for a well-deserved cup of coffee. Mom says company is coming at three for Easter dinner and she needs to boil-up the potatoes and foil-up the ham.

The girls beg Jeremy to hide the eggs one more time. They never seem to tire. Jeremy, fifteen, would rather be in his room listening to music. But his four-year-old sisters are so adorable in their Easter bonnets with messy, candy-smeared faces, he relents.

“One more time.”

Jeremy slides the last egg into the rabbit’s nesting box. The rabbit is going to give birth any day now and has lined the box with her own fur.

Twenty minutes later the girls have found all of the eggs except one. Jeremy plays the hot-cold game with them until they are standing directly in front of the hutch. Jumper nibbles at their fingers through the wire mesh and they giggle.

Kara spies the egg first and shoves her sister aside. Lacey allows her sister to dominate as usual. Kara is so excited she runs with the egg towards the house, “Mommy, Jumper laid her baby egg.”

She stumbles: the egg hits the sidewalk, the eggshell spider-web cracks and some of the yolk squishes out!
Both girls squeal in anguish.
Lacey screams at Kara, “You killed Jumper’s baby.”

The dog gobbles the egg, purple shell and all.
