A wife gives her husband the third degree.
Tall Tales
WC 218

Observing my tardy husband as he hurried through the doorway, I could see the wheels turning. Added to the lack of eye contact, and the beads of perspiration forming on his brow, I knew a tall tale or two, or three were about to burst forth.

"You'll never believe this! ."

Here it comes.

"Try me." I folded my arms.

“First off, the car wouldn’t start so I had to call Triple-A.”

“Why didn’t you call me?”

“They came out right away and gave me a jump.”

“Then why are you so late?”

“Okay. Then I stopped at Walmart for that motor oil I needed.”

“Which took what, twenty minutes?”

“Well, as luck would have it, I realized I locked the keys in the car and had to call Triple A again.”

“Why didn’t you call me? I have a copy of your car key on my key ring.”

“Well, it didn’t take long.”

“Then why are you so late?”

And he went on and on with reasons why he was so late.

His nose was getting so long that I finally said, “Honey, come to bed. It’s late,” to put him out of his misery.

I may never know what mischief he got into, but he’s home safe and sound, and that’s what matters.

And, anyway, I love the big lug.
