Emmy and Claire are arguing. Who will win?
A Test of Wills
WC 223

I turned away from Claire and her angry buggy eyes.

“Are you listening to me, Emmy?”

“Actually, I'm tuning you out,” I said as I walked away.

The argument had been going on for hours now, and I was exhausted. I abhor confrontation.

“I want to do things my way, Claire. Stop arguing with me !”

I knew if I didn't get control of the situation pretty darn soon, I'd—

“Stop resisting, Emmy. You know I'm right.”

She probably was right; she always is. But for once, I wanted to follow my instincts.

“If you insist on abandoning us--"

“I’m not. I can’t. I wish I could.”

“Then how can you leave us, Emmy? I’m confused. Explain yourself.”

“I don’t know. I can’t explain myself, but my mind is made-up, and you can't stop me.”

I picked up the black onyx paperweight from my desk and turned back toward her. I would use it if I had to.

“Maybe I can't, but Tony can.”

“You wouldn’t, Claire!”

“I would. I will!"

Tony was dangerous. Tony was violent. Tony could end me. I had to stop this.

“You've gone too far, Claire.”

I raised the paperweight over my head and smashed it into the mirror, again and again, decimating it. Shards of silvered glass landed at my feet.

Now that's how you win an argument.
