are we turning into our own mothers?
How can she be this way! my daughter despairs to me
A friend turned turncoat has given her the look,
the cold shoulder, the innuendo.
There is nothing I can do to make it better,
I can’t explain to her how females think…

How can she be this way! I remember saying to my mother
We all treat her kindly, lovingly
But we are apparently the devil when things
are not done Grammie’s way.
There is nothing you can do or say, she tells me,
she is old and set in her ways.

How can she be this way! I hear her saying on the phone
and realize it is all about me
trying to control her young life
And I suddenly see the circle I am caught in
and giggle as I pass by.
