The selfishness of one could lead to the death of another
Sitting on the phone
Listening to your voice
Just sitting at this table
Just to hear you choke
“I got laid off today- I don’t know what to do”
You’re asking me for help
Silently, I laugh at you

Drumming my fingers slowly
As I glance over at the wall
Rolling my eyes and yawning-
Casually ignoring pity’s call
You fall upon your knees and cry
As joy flutters through my mind
Standing from my chair- you tell me you just wish that you could die.

Noticing the tremble in your words
And envisioning your every tear
I close my eyes and pray
That my own selfishness will not invoke your fear
For I know that you are weak
And have little strength to even breath
Turning my back would kill you- taking your own life is not the revenge I seek

So I sit here on the phone
And tell you to put the knife away
Just sitting here on the phone
Trying to think of else I could say
My ignorance and selfishness led you to this place
Just step back into reality
And turn away from the Devil’s eternal embrace
