Writing a Poem

I once wrote a poem about lions,
But I had trouble with the rhymes.
So I changed all the lions to cats
And made my poetry full of hats
"Writing poems isn't hard," I smiled

But then my teacher said to me
That poems were really similies:
My cat is like a gopher
Because he hides and purrs.
"That's a lot of work," I said.

I sighed, hunted deep inside my head,
Considered all the books I’d read,
Then started writing what I felt
The day I earned my karate belt.
That's how I wrote my second poem.

Now I think poetry is lots of fun --
Whether serious or a silly pun.
I've learned poems can be anything
If they make you laugh, sing,
Cry, look, stop, or even just think.
