The Texans wanted independence and died for it in the Battle of the Alamo.
Writer's Cramp -- New Prompt:

Independence Day is a good day to write about history.

I have in front of me a little booklet coming from the newest Cd by Meat Loaf.

I quote:"On March 6th, 1836 the walls of the Alamo fell to the Mexican army. After a 12 day siege the troops of Santa Ana were victorious but too exhausted to hold on, and the Texans won the war.

It's further from El Paso to Texarkhana, than from New York to Chicago.

And when it joined the Union, Texas was the biggest state..."

Your prompt: I am not familiar with this piece of history, since I am Dutch.

Write a story or a poem, explaining exactly what happened in that period in 1836, from March 6th until the day the Texans joined the Union.

Texas Pride

         We were the Texans, standing up strong;

         Cattle and sheep were our favorite song.

         We built our houses with willful pride;

         We kept our guns and wives by our side.

         But the government rode us much too hard;

         So we told those Mex's, we’d disregard

         Their right to rule our Texas hides.

         Angry with our obstinate side,

         They argued against our independence

         Insisting on their superintendence.

         So Santa Anna, he was sent

         To end this surly argument.

         He brought 5,000 to whip our butts,

         But we had men with iron-strong guts.

         Into the Alamo mission and fort

         We moved our small cohort.

         Jim Bowie and Daniel Boone,

         And 150 in that hot afternoon,

         We all waged battle to be free.

         Colonel Travis sent out a plea,

         But without the ammo for our guns,

         Our fight was lost before it’d begun.

         And so we died, refusing defeat

         In the struggle when our fort was breached,

         But the Texas spirit will always live on

         Thanks to our famous Samuel Houston,

         Who raged against those Mexican forces

         Routing them out, along with their horses.

         He forced Santa Anna to sign us a pact,

         Making our freedom a legal fact.

         But Texas, an independent nation,

         Was confronted by much frustration,

         And so it voted for annexation.

         In 1845 we joined the rest of the nation,

         But, “Remember the Alamo” is still our call,

         And don’t you forget it -- one and all!
