The mother of the bride-to-be tells her side of it all.
I wasn't told about the plan of engagement until weeks later after StoryMaster had asked StoryMistress's father if he could marry her.

Being that SMs and I are very close every day of the year and the fact we were spending extra time together on the convention, SM was afraid I would let it slip. But it seems I was starting to cause some problems when my husband said he was coming to Open Mic Night.

I thought, why would he want to come to Open Mic Night? This is a man who hates to be around crowds, and he wants to go to Open Mic Night? It just didn't add up. I said to him, "I don't think you'd enjoy Open Mic Night as much as the Creative Auction. Come to the auction instead!"

After a few back and forths with my husband over when he should come to the convention, the phone call came in from SM. "You're making this very hard for us!" he laughed. "He's coming to Open Mic Night because I'm going to ask SMs to marry me!"

Here I am in the butterfly garden leaning on my one crutch bawling my eyes out. "OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD!" I was yelling into the phone. SM said they hadn't wanted to tell me because of being so close to my daughter. I assured him that it was fine and I would keep her distracted with the convention.

But, boy, was my head was spinning!

Working with SMs while getting ready for this convention was hard. I was just so excited. Sometimes I would look at her and wanted to scream, "OH MY GOD! You're getting engaged!" But of course I didn't and I kept the secret to myself.

At Open Mic Night, I was so excited I could barely stand it. I tried to keep myself busy with the video camera and what everyone on stage was doing. I just couldn't sit still. SM's parents, who also knew about the upcoming proposal, were present at the convention; his mom and I kept eye contact the whole night through the crowd of attendees.

As Open Mic was coming to a close and the last act had finished, I moved to the back of the room. I looked over at Denise and waved my Kleenex; she waved her Kleenex back at me. We were ready. I looked over at my daughter and there she sat, so innocent of what was about to happen. She was signing Survival Guides and was so relaxed. I was giddy with anticipation.

When SM started with the announcement that he was going to finish up the night with a magic trick that he'd been practicing, I knew exactly what was going to happen next. I had run it through my head a hundred times. And sure enough, SMs turned around and looked me right in the face like, "What is he doing?!" Without hesitation, I gave her the exact same look back with a "I have no idea!"

He told the crowd he needed a volunteer and he asked SMs to join him on stage. By the time she sat down on stage, I was already in tears. When the magic wand was waving, I was sobbing. I'm thankful that the bright lights were shining in SMs's eyes.

When SM dropped to his knee, I could hear some people making gasping sounds like they knew what was coming. SMs still didn't know what was going on. She was clueless. Her complete shock and the look on her face was priceless. That was worth all these weeks of not telling and keeping the secret.

As SM and SMs were hugging, the whole room was in an uproar. There wasn't a dry eye in the place. People were hugging each other and crying. Their leaders shared a special, loving moment with all of them. It was a moment to remember.

I couldn't be more thrilled with these two people. Not just because SMs is my one and only daughter and child, but because these two people are best friends. That is the secret of a great, lasting relationship, and they have found it.

Congratulations to both my daughter and new son!
