Beloved returns to the lover after a life time of waiting but it is too late
SHADOW OF MYSELF

Who am I? A mere shadow
Of myself; I can’t tell
What’s my present or future.
Only in past I dwell.

In my youth I was in bloom,
I too was once fragrant.
Once I was a bubbling force,
Which, alas, is now spent.

I’m now shorn of my flowers,
Thorns only me adorn.
But for a few fading leaves,
I’m withered and forlorn.

It’s true we were once in love,
With passion unbounding;
Circumstances took a turn
And led to our parting.

Despite all these years I do
Harbour still my love flame.
But it’s now buried too deep,
Passions it can’t inflame.

Even though in quest of love,
You have come now yourself,
What can I offer, now I’m
A shadow of myself.
