Coming to the end of a journey. In this case, the journey is a relationship.
Epiphany

I should be exhilarated.
Having been here before,
my heart knows the thrill of the moment…
I look forward to the breathlessness
of the free fall,
the shock of the water
against my plunging body,
and the blinding sunlight
as I burst back through the surface.

You are exhilarated.
Having not been before,
your heart pounds, awaiting the moment…
Anxious to feel your feet leave cold stone,
your body cut through the air,
and the lake suddenly
enrobe you.

On the count of three,
we will go.

One.

Two.

Three.

I watch
as you gracefully make your descent.
Sad to have abandoned you,
but confident it’s best.
In an instant, you have vanished
beneath the sun’s reflecting glare.
The moment your dark shadow
rises, and I know that you’ll be safe,
I turn,
and walk away.

I’m sorry to leave you in this way,
but -

I cannot always be your counselor and teacher.
I cannot only be your adviser and guide.

And you, do not want more.
