"Chaos" contest entry
Two Hundred Twelve

It’s dark and still,
such sultry air.
Humid,
like the night in August.

Soft click, low hummmmm
Barely taken notice of.
Still, nothing stirs,
it’s peaceful yet –

Until…

A whispering ripple
signals change.

One tiny being appears.
An instant there,
and then it’s gone.
Vanished, into dark above.

And then another,
same fate suffered.

And then another,
same fate suffered.

More and more
come marching forward.
Replacing comrades
that they’ve lost.

So taken by their single purpose,
unaware of growing numbers.
Soon,
it’s madness all around.

Imagine now, you’re there with them.
“Ouch!”
“Be careful!”
“Mind your space!”

And then,
A scream assails the ears.
Another trigger
bringing change.

Chamomile, when steeped is soothing.
But in the teapot-
chaos reigns.
