Neutral Smiles

Neutral smiles cross my face,
a single tear rolls gently
down my cheek
as I look to something
far away,
past my shoulder
far to the left.

Forgotten memories
of something past.
It was ghastly
Heartbreaking,
Unfair.

Neutral smiles cross my face,
a single tear rolls gently
down my cheek
as I look to something
Close to me.

Suddenly, I stop to think,
ignoring the feelings
creeping up inside
my mind.

I must leave this place
of neutral smiles,
this place of
misplaced sadness.

Find a freedom
I haven’t known
since I was eleven,
with my hair flying
behind me.
I need it more
than I need air.

I stop.
I hear my heart
beating...
and nothing more.
I am filled
with a peace
I have never known.
My neutral smile
widens.
