Written for the poem per day Challenge, February 5th, 2005
Sometimes life just happens
’Midst the turmoil and delights
The laughter and the frights
The time we spend with friends

Sometimes life just happens
It hits us like a sharp blow,
No warning to let us know
That the times we’ve had will end

When I discovered the lump
Which hadn’t been there last week
I felt I couldn’t breath
My stomach was one big knot

I was beyond crying tears
As I told the vet my concerns
And she sadly confirmed
What I knew were my worst fears

A carcinoma, a tumor,
An unwanted growth
There is nothing that can be done
For he is far too old.

Why darken his last days?
You could make things worse.
So I brought him back home
And snuggled with him all day.

I’m happy he’s in no pain
My little amber-eyed angel
He is happy and content
But I am going insane.

Memories I will make
With this precious little one
For as long as I have
A month, a week, or a day.

And when his life is done
His memory will still live on
Perhaps then I will write
About my shining sun.

About his beautiful life
A poem for him I’ll fashion.
For now, life just happens,
And I cannot write.
