Sookie Poole is not who she thinks. When she receives a phone call followed by a registered package, Sookie's world is turned upside down. She discovers that she was adopted, though her quirky mother never told her. The story follows both Sookie's life in Alabama, as she comes to term with the revelation, and the lives of a Polish-American family running a gas station and learning to fly in Wisconsin, during World War II.
