Summary of this DVD...
A stuffy young man goes to teach in an English boys' school at the end of the 19th Century. He has trouble getting along because of his own nature and is unhappy about that. He goes on a vacation to the Alps (I think) and while in a perilious situation he meets the love of his life.

She totally turns his life around by believing in him. She loves him and because of that everyone sees him in a different light. He becomes a most beloved and heroic member of the faculty. His wife dies tragically young, but he never forgets her belief in him and he cherishes the memory all his life long. She always thought he could be headmaster of the school.

When World War I comes and a lot of boys and teachers are called up, Mr. Chips has retired, but is called back into service in his eighties to finally be headmaster and fulfill the destiny his wife predicted for him.
This type of DVD is good for...
anyone who wants to see a heartwarming, timeless story about how a teacher comes to be someone beloved and cherished by all who know him. It didn't happen overnight and it wasn't an easy transformation. It required love and someone to believe in him.
I especially liked...
Greer Garson. I thought her performance was a standout, more so than Robert Donat. I thought he was good, but I did not think his performance was as memorable as Clark Gable's in Gone With the Wind.
Further Comments...
I wanted to see this film because I am studying 1939. I could not imagine how someone could have given a performance better than Clark Gable's in GWTW or James Stewart in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. This was a good performance, good enough to win in any other year, but it is not on the level with the other two.

However, I did think that Greer Garson was a standout in this and to me her performance was right up there with Vivian Leigh's in GWTW (Leigh won the Oscar)
