Summary of this DVD...
A black man has a tragic and traumatic childhood experience with the murder of his father and rape of his mother. His family worked in the southern cotton fields. He leaves, rises above and works in Washington, DC in a posh hotel. In the 1950's he is discovered and brought into the White House where he works for thirty years as a Butler. This is about his journey, which included interaction with Presidents Eisenhower through Reagan.

One of his children is killed in Vietnam and the other becomes a Black Panther during the 1960's and 1970's. This film bridges generations of understanding within a family and between an admirable man and his demanding employer, the Presidents of the U.S.
This type of DVD is good for...
anyone interested in White House history with a new perspective on things. This is based on a true story.
I especially liked...
Forest Whitaker. My goodness, he is brilliant in every thing he does.
I didn't like...
the casting of Oprah as his wife. She did a good job, but at times she was too old to play the part and then too young. She is in her 60's and I didn't buy her as in her 30's or later in her 80's. Whitaker can play younger than he is for some reason, but maybe I know too much about Oprah.

Somebody in their actual 40's would have been better suited for the part.
This DVD made me feel...
like I watched a good film. I got rid of my cable/Direct TV in March. I had heard a lot of bad things about this movie, mostly on Fox News. But, it was much better and more entertaining than I expected it to be.
The cast of this DVD...
is excellent. It includes Robin Williams, John Cusak, Cuba Gooding, Jr. Alan Rickman and Vanessa Redgrave and Jane Fonda, to name a few.
I recommend this DVD because...
It is an entertaining and good story. Forest Whitaker is superb in it. If you can get past Oprah playing a thirty something predatory dame, than you will be okay. It was much better and more entertaining than I expected it to be.
Further Comments...
One thing I didn't like was all the white people are the monsters and the black guy who has bad behavior (and sleeps with Forest Whitaker's wife) has excuses for it. This is the same kind of thinking that characterizes everybody by the color of their skin in the first place. It seemed rather ironic to me.
