Summary of this Book...
This is a thorough guide to the the mystery of Haiku writing and shares a bit of the history or the form and its evolution, shedding light on the controversy and confusion about the form. It is a positive overview going beyond the right and wrong of differing perspectives to focus on experiential exercises in how to create Haiku. It includes rules as they have developed with examples of techniques one can apply to the form, from the simple first step to the more complex. Written by an a ward winning Haiku poet and teacher.
This type of Book is good for...
Anyone who really wants to learn the craft of Haiku, and gain insight into how it works and what to do. It is easy to read and follow.
I especially liked...
The positive vibe and the suggested exercises, quick list of rules, and the explanation of the techniques.
she explains too how the idea of Haiku is to try to create it in our own language so it captures the essence of how the Japanese meant it to be. Translation is not so helpful.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
get writing more haiku. I began working with the ideas from the start as it is like a guide to follow step by step.
This Book made me feel...
I understood more about the form as I ahve seen differing perspectives and wondered which were correct. I was more peaceful --as it is beyond right and wrong--but more an evolution.
The author of this Book...
Jane Reichhold is well respected Haijin and teacher of the form. Much experience in writing and studying it.
I recommend this Book because...
It can help in the understanding of Haiku and how it works, so more people can add to this rich, mysterious genre. So many of us were taught a basic form, which does not in essence reflect the truth of Haiku.
