Summary of this Book...
The Narnian is a wonderfully detailed story about C.S Lewis and his life, focussing on his imagination. It tells how he became one of the influential religious writers of the time and solves the mystery of how this intellectual professor came to write the beloved Narnia series for children. It covers his childhood loss and closeness with is brother in Ireland, his WW1 experiences, friendship with the Inklings, life at college and his late marriage to Joy Davidson. The author uses lots of Lewis' actual quotes and words in the story telling and the details are vividly presented in a style that is easy to follow and read. It was fun to see a few photographs of the key people in his life too.
This type of Book is good for...
Anyone who loves Narnia, biographies and has interest in C.S. Lewis will enjoy this book. A collector's item for sure.
I especially liked...
I really liked how the author wove quotes from his books into the story, drawing expereinces from Lewis's life to show the connections to his stories and writings. eg. like when he dreamed about the great Lion Aslan, who seemed to bring the rest of the books into his mind." and how when he began to write Narnia it was not with a christian message, that eventually did take hold underriding the series.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
buy a copy to place beside my biography of Tolkien and feature "imagination" in a recent fantasy newsletter.
The author of this Book...
Alan Jacobs is a professor of English and Director of the Faith and learning Program at Wheaton College in Illinois. He has written several books and articles in periodicals.
I recommend this Book because...
I recommend it as it was interesting to read as it shows personality rather than just the facts. It is a real tribute to the Narnian.
