Wow.

I don’t think I’ve ever had the privilege of reading a book like this one that, as soon as it is completed, begs to be read again. Robin Wall Kimmerer is a Potawatomi (Native American people of the Great Plains) woman and a scientist with this book being a perfect blend of her two ways of knowing the world. She packs such incredible depth of indigenous knowledge and passion into this work, it is beyond inspirational. There were several chapters that felt like a lightbulb being turned on, as if I had been searching for something just out of sight and Kimmerer’s words guided me to that which my soul already knew. The book is read by Kimmerer herself, which gives her words an added power. It truly felt like a meditation for me, listening to her teachings and letting them absorb fully into my being. In particular, her chapter about being a mother and her need to mother the world around her was so touching. I often felt my jaw drop open in awe, admiration, and desire to share this book with as many people as will listen to me. Her way of living is purposeful and powerful, and her way of speaking about the science she has learned and the stories of her culture are so accessible and honest. Not to mention her beautiful word choice and unique perspective and world-view. It is a critical look at human people’s place on this planet and among all the other non-human people who we share this place with. I honestly cannot say enough good things about this book. I will be purchasing the paper copy and intend to read it again and again. I feel a certain religious fever about the teachings in this book that I have not felt before. I want to live the way Kimmerer does and I want to share in her grace and culture. Kimmerer speaks often about gifts in this book and only taking what is given. If she were reading this review, I’d want her to know that I have received her gift and intend to reciprocate the generosity. Thank you.
