Summary of this Book...
In the harsh wilderness of colonial Massachusetts, Martha Allen works as a servant in her cousin's household, taking charge and locking wills with everyone. Thomas Carrier labors for the family and is known both for his immense strength and size and mysterious past. The two begin a courtship that suits their independent natures, with Thomas slowly revealing the story of his part in the English Civil War. But in the rugged new world they inhabit, the danger is ever-present, whether it be from the assassins sent from London to kill the executioner of Charles I or the wolves, in many forms, who hunt for blood.

I especially liked...
Although this book wasn't based on facts, you can tell the author did her research to recreate the daily struggles of life on a dark frontier. Most of it was historically accurate and gave me a chilling glimpse of the life my ancestors knew.
I didn't like...
The author switched scenes between Martha in Billerica, Charles II in England, and even some characters onboard a ship heading to America. It was confusing and unnecessary. I felt like I needed a family tree to go along with the book to understand some of the connections between characters. I think Kent overcomplicated the plot by attempting to add several subplots.
I recommend this Book because...
Overall, the beautiful imagery and unexpected symbolism balance out my frustrations with scene switching.
Further Comments...
This book was previously released as The Traitor's Wife and is a prequel to The Heretic's Daughter
