Summary of this DVD...
This DVD tells the story of Meggie Cleary and Father Ralph. It's set in the early 1900's (spans a time frame of 1921-1960's) and is set in Australian outback on a sheep farm called Dorgheara, after the Irish town.

Meggie is the only girl in the family. Her family, the Clearys are employed by Mary Carson, her father's sister, to tend to the sheep farm. Father Ralph, a priest is the only one (aside from brother Frank) who shows geniune affection for her.

As time passes, and Meggie becomes a woman, Father Ralph is torn between consumating his feelings for her or giving everything of his being to the church.

The story is a family saga and follows Meggie and Ralph as they struggle with their emotions and the consquences of those actions.
This type of DVD is good for...
This is a family saga. It's a mini series that's about 6 hours and there's a "making of" video at the end. It's good entertainment.
I especially liked...
The making of "The Thorn Birds" video.
When I finished viewing this DVD I wanted to...
Read the book!
This DVD made me feel...
The theme of forbidden love is a powerful one throughout the story. I was on the edge of my seat.
The cast of this DVD...
It's a great cast! Richard Chamberlin and Rachel Ward have good chemistry. Everyone brought their A game.
I recommend this DVD because...
it tells a great story.
Further Comments...
It's hopeful and heartbreaking, a look at a life with ups and downs, happiness and sadness. The film suprisingly was filmed in Simi Valley, CA and not Australia. It is useful in that it's a nice escape from the world and it's problems for a little bit. The length is appropriate and gives the material justice. I believe the plot follows the book, but I think the book offers more character depth. The setting, while filmed in Simi Valley, CA had me convinced it was in Australia. Well done.
