Summary of this Book...
Amelia is a mermaid. She has left the sea behind and married Jack. Stories abound about her in their little 19th century Maine town, but it's not until several decades after Jack's death (mermaids aging far slower than their human counterparts) that tales of a 'mermaid' reach that greatest of showmen, PT Barnum.

Barnum sends his second-in-command, Levi, up to Maine to scout out this mermaid-woman and to bring her back to New York as the latest in a long line of exhibits for his exhibition.

The book follows Amelia as she first turns Levi away and then chooses to join Barnum under her own terms. Advertised as THE FEEJEE MERMAID, Barnum and Levi concoct a hoax to take in the whole of New York city and much of the east coast.
This type of Book is good for...
Lovers of the whimsical and mysterious, The Mermaid is written in a dreamy yet matter-of-fact way; part fairy-tale, part historical curiosity.
I don't recommend this Book because...
NOT recommended for readers who like fast-paced or intense novels; The Mermaid drifts along at its own speed and follows whatever eddies it pleases.
