Wow. I’m honestly having trouble putting into words how much I enjoyed this book. “Love Warrior” is a memoir written by Glennon Doyle and the audiobook is read by her as well, which certainly adds to the power of her story. I couldn’t get enough of her words and flew through this book, a sure sign that I will need to read it again. I was tearing up by the end of the prelude and full on crying in my car on the way to work within the first 30 minutes of listening to Doyle’s story. If that doesn’t tell you how much her words moved me, I don’t know what else to say. I started taking notes the very first day about certain quotes I loved or passages I wanted to come back to, but my list became too long after reading only the first two chapters that I decided I’d need to read the whole book again, and probably again after that.

Now, with everything I said above, I must also say that Doyle’s story is incredibly painful and sad. There are times I cried with joy, but there were more times I wept with Doyle’s pain and anger. Doyle is not shy when talking about her experiences including eating disorders, addictions, abortion, sex, alcoholism, body image, porn, and her marriage that threatens to fall apart. It is a story of one woman, but I think people, men and women alike, will be able to relate to aspects of Doyle’s story. Her journey is so gripping, moving, powerful, and tragic at the same time, the book is addicting. Coupled with her phenomenal writing, there is nothing I didn’t like about this book.

In one particular passage that I did take notes on, Doyle took herself on a retreat to a beach to sit and think all alone. She is transformed by the ocean, and I was so touched by her words, that I have to share them with you here.

“The water is speaking in a language I knew before the world taught me its language. I lie there and let the sound of the surf massage my soul for two hours. I let it speak to me and I do not speak back. I just receive. I understand with great gratitude that I could rest here forever, offer the sea nothing in return, and it would never stop speaking to me. The surf is gentle, and selfless, and steady. This is not a transaction – it is a gift.”

Please read this book.
