Summary of this Book...
The origin story of one of Star Wars' most infamous Imperial Naval officers, the book tells the story of how Thrawn came to be a Grand Admiral in the Imperial Navy from inauspicious beginnings on a backwater planet. The book details his initial contact with the Empire, the key events that led to his meteoric rise, and the strategies and tactics that made him such a formidable opponent.
This type of Book is good for...
Anyone who loves the larger Star Wars universe, or just good old fashioned military sci-fi in general.
I especially liked...
The fact that Thrawn achieves his success through genuine clever thinking. This isn't a book where the author merely *tells* you how smart the character is, or where the adversaries of the character are dumbed down to make them seem smarter; this is a book where the title character succeeds with some genuinely cunning and surprising tactical choices that pay off for him.
When I finished n/a this Book I wanted to...
Immediately get started on the next book in the series. I can see why Thrawn is such an iconic character in the canon, and I want to know more about his exploits over his long career.
This Book made me feel...
Like I've really been missing out on some excellent science fiction in the Star Wars canon of books.
I recommend this Book because...
It was really well-written and engaging. The storylines all come together at the end, the characters are intriguing, and there are a lot of callbacks to things in the films and the larger Star Wars universe that will give fans of the franchise a little smile as they read about them.
Further Comments...
I was genuinely surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. I've read a handful of Star Wars books over the years and have never been too terribly impressed with them, but this one is decidedly better. What I really appreciated about the book was that Thrawn, a character who is meant to be a tactical genius and one of the best strategic minds of his generation, is always depicted as someone capable and intelligent through his actions in the book. A lot of authors might be tempted to just *tell* the reader that he's super smart, or dumb down his opposition, but this book actually puts Thrawn in situations where he's required to demonstrate his intelligence, and he comes through in spades.

At first I wasn't too interested in the other characters in the book (particularly Arihnda's storyline), but everything came together in the end in a really satisfying and well-structured way. This was the first Star Wars book I've read in a long time, and I'm already excited to keep reading on in the series and see where it goes.
