Summary of this Book...
Narrated by the youngest of three sons, the book begins on the boy's 7th birthday. It's a story about three brothers who are raised by teen-aged parents (the mom is white and the dad is Puerto Rican.) Totally dysfunctional, this family also share moments of love, giggles, and fun times, though they also deal with an abusive father who beats on their mother. There seems to be a bond, however, that holds them together as children. This short coming of age novel will stay in your thoughts for days.
This type of Book is good for...
Maybe families going through similar issues would connect to this. Or students who are studying to be counselors or something.
I especially liked...
The writing was well-done. Due to the nature of the book, I'm glad it was not longer.
I didn't like...
The issues disturbed me. I wish the ending had turned out differently.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
I need to read something uplifting now.
This Book made me feel...
This book made me feel depressed, disturbed, and helpless for families going through this. It's not the sort of book I would normally read.
I recommend this Book because...
Perhaps others might connect to this if they'd gone through the same ordeal.
I don't recommend this Book because...
It brings no joy. I felt bad for what was going on and wished I would have researched what the story was about before I read it. It just depressed me too much.
Further Comments...
I normally enjoy coming-of-age stories but this one will not be one I recommend as a feel-good book. It just wasn't for me.
