How to Read the Tarot

Begin by brewing a cup of tea,
a nervine, lemon balm or chamomile,
this is after all, your future.
A reading at the dark of the moon is best,
before the night creatures crawl
and bad humours fill the air.
Pick a circular deck, with a fairy-tale motif,
and no reversals.
Hold a question in your heart,
shuffle the cards and place them on the table.
Choose only two.
Like the ancient Israelites,
these are your seer stones, Urim and Thumimm,
black and white, yes or no.
Isn't that all you were asking?

Summer Haze

It's too hot to be this stupid.
Climate change is real folks,
a spillage that devours
claims to fixed names.
A glimmer is not a trigger
but the sidewalks shimmer with heat.
Laborers and homeless
crumble and wither.
Monstrous storms brew
off the coast of Africa.
The kids start school on Thursday
and pray for hurricane days.
The electric bill keeps rising
despite the kirtan of ceiling fans.
Thoughts are muddled.
Is it a fever, creeping mold
or just the summer haze?

HOME

Weaving my own wings
I wend my way home
not to a place
but a portal
of magickal birds
and a gift of air.
I undo the twist of rope
around my neck,
call in the nightingale's song.
Ravens spring from my tears,
prayer flags unfurl,
I am ready to fly.

Brave New World--apologies to Aldous Huxley

We will be brave
embrace our pain
cry and shine
stray from the crafty line
that only humans matter.
We will escape the trap
of the anthropocene
settle in the cracks
of slime molds, fungi, leopards.
We will watch our worries
sparkling anxieties
drain away.
We will trim AI to a nubbin.

Poetry Week

poems are made by fools like me
storytellers create potions
on the road fashioned out of dreams
out of time and mind solutions
and fostering revolutions
conjoining heart and head and hand
an ascending absolution
raise your voice, sing loud, take a stand

Christmas/Yule in July

New gods are born in the cracks and crevices,
not the shallows where the light gets in.
So a spell for Yule of damp, dim words.
I believe in the night, even as the light returns.
Mother Night split me, make me twitch with pain and joy.
I answer your call to my shattered mind.
I will hold your gaze for as long as I dare.

Ten Again

A black hole
invaded my brain,
my body became a child's.

Molecules
of hearing in red,
the paraterranean.

Young again,
open potentials,
a soundtrack of politics.

Anarchy, a perfect solution.
Young and old meld in Divine union.

An Ovi Prayer

May you find springs of deepest rest
And know all your desires blessed
and downy feathers for your nest.
This is the symbiocene.

We are past the anthropocene
of only humans and their mien.
Plants, animals , rocks, winds all seen
and Earth spinning with hope and mirth.

Authors Note: The anthropocene indicates an age the is human centric. The symbiocene indicates an age where all creation is the center.

Mother's Day--A Sybylla story

It has been over a year since I have spoken to Sybylla. Sybylla is a veiled mermaid that resides in the retention pond behind my condo. She came to live there when toxic algal blooms poisoned the Gulf of Mexico and she remained through the height of the Covid pandemic. She helped me keep my sanity with her oracular statements during the Covid times of isolation.

I had gone down to the pond Mother's Day at sunset to watch the cerulean sky turn to purple and pinks. I was still wearing my white carnation
corsage. Growing up, it was a tradition to wear a white carnation on Mother's Day if your mother had passed, or a red one if she was living.

I wasn't expecting to see Sybylla after so much clock time had passed. I knew though that the trickle and glimmer of thought and feeling across time and space kept us connected.

I heard a scraping sound in the shallows of the pond accompanied by the smell of singed grass and knew she was there. Sybylla had become more verbal with each meeting, but was always curt and to the point.

In her gravelly voice she blurted, "CuriousWhat's with the white flower?". I explained to her the symbolism of the flower. I also added that my mother's life had been a catastrophe marred by mental illness and an early death from cancer. I knew that I still carried a mother wound in my body and soul.

"Give your pain," chanted Sybylla, "to the Great Cosmic Mother, She who births all, She who nurtures all."

With a splash she disappeared into the depths of the pond.

Watching the last rays of sunlight dappled over the water I removed my carnation and placed it at the water's edge. Slowly, imperceptibly I watched as the flower petals changed from white to red.

"Good night, Mama", I whispered , "I love you".
