PROMPT November 14th

A Mystery Genre prompt tonight. You are researching your genealogy and find that ancestors from different generations and different countries made visits to the same remote place. Tell us about this remote place. Why were your ancestors going there?

There is a story in my family about a place in the north. I have the exact coordinates, after decades of begging for them from my father. The stories are that something critical to the future of our bloodline will happen at these coordinates when the stars are in a precise configuration. When they come into alignment a portal will open. When that portal opens, one of us has to go through it.

Since I was old enough to remember they have told me and my siblings of this story. Time has passed, many of my family have died from the radiation sickness that kills most people these days. When I was younger the story was that we would nuke ourselves into oblivion. It isn't what happened. The background radiation of the universe has inexplicably grown exponentially over the last few years. Scientists have come to the conclusion that the universe is in the process of rapidly imploding. They don't know how or why.

My father gave me the coordinates on his deathbed and told me the stars were aligning. I had four days to get to the coordinates. He didn't know if any of the other branches of the family were going to send anyone. He just said, "Seyona, you are our last chance. No one will be alive for the next alignment if there ever is one. You are the one in the story. Now go!"

I am twenty-eight, I don't have much of a life savings of my own, though my family inheritance is pretty vast considering previous generations. I am going to put all I have into getting to those coordinates by the alignment. I will be there when the portal opens. I will be the one who finds out what is on the other side!

PROMPT November 13th

A Science-Fiction type prompt tonight. In your world, all citizens are temporarily neutered at birth. When you want to become a parent, you must prove to the government that you’ll be suitable caretakers and providers before you are allowed to procreate. How do you 'prove to the government' that you'll be a good caretaker/parent.

Of course, I would have a stock portfolio to show, and my selection of a financially prepared parenting partner would a point in my corner. I would offer up my extensive parenting certifications earned yearly since puberty. My house would be pre-baby proofed and up to the strictest of building and safety codes. In short, every aspect of my life would be certified from every angle to show my preparedness.

A reminder I could say to myself before I’m tempted to respond to anger with anger, to fear with fear, to negativity with negativity is...

Beaoul sat communing with Toni, the Middle of Everywhen entity that was as close as she could claim to having a home. She had been with Toni for what felt like years. It was hard to register the passage of time when time passed completely without change in the infinite white abyss that was the plane of Toni that Beaoul interacted with. Toni had reassured her that less than a few earth months had passed.

Beaoul had left a few times to prove to herself she could and that she could find her way back. She slept when she was tired, and ate when food appeared in front of her, supplied by Toni. Toni had't provided her with an ounce of meat since she arrived. Even though, as a hellhound, Beaoul was a born carnivore if not outright cannibal she had still been entirely satisfied with what Toni provided.

Why do you feel such anger? Toni's consciousness pressed on Beaoul's mind interrupting her memory cruise.

"I, just don't know. It was how I was raised?"

That is a question not an answer. What could you say to yourself before you're tempted to respond to anger with anger, to fear with fear, to negativity with negativity?

"That it is Mira's training talking not my real self?"

Beaoul, that is a good idea, but for it to work you mustn't treat the answer like a question.

Beaoul clawed at the surface beneath her.

Ouch!

"Oh, no! I didn't mean to! Oh! Are you going to be alright? My claws! They kill!" She had a flashback to the sight of some of Mira's enemies dying from flesh wounds inflicted by her fellow hellhounds. It was horrible. Decomposition was the cause of death. She flashed back to Seyona's death. It had been rather similar. Seyona had provided Beaoul the key which had allowed Beaoul to finally escape from the Queen of darkness.

Humor vibrated through Beaoul's mind, I am fine Beaoul. Your claws cannot harm me.

Beaoul felt no relief, the flashbacks took her again and she was trapped within her own mind reliving some of the worst moments she had experienced. She was aware of nothing else, not the infinite whiteness of Toni, not the tears rolling down her muzzle.

Why do you cry?

Beaoul rubbed her muzzle against her armpits, "I didn't tell you how Seyona died."

You said Mira Black killed her.

"Mira sprayed her with some kind of illness it ate her alive. She rotted alive, just like victims of hellhound wounds," Beaol answered making the connection real in her own mind.

She kills. That is what Seyona and I were trying to stop, if you care about Seyona as much as you seem to you could always take up that goal.

"How?"

Start with this disease. You were exposed and stand here unharmed. Perhaps you could start with this. What do you know about this disease?

"Mira plans to unleash it on a world known as Tradehub."

Then that is where you should start. Fortunately I know just where it is...

You are desperate to use the bathroom. But, you share this with several others. It's down the hall (waaaay down the hall), and it's cold despite the heat being set to the 'normal' temperature. Being an older person, your legs and ability to hold it ain't what it used to be. How do you handle this dire situation?

Well, Jim to be frank It is called a bucket! Some people cut a hole in a chair and place said bucket beneath it. Others just squat and aim as best they can, at the can. Some call it a commode, others a chamber pot. I know you said I was old but you didn't sound as though you were too young to be aware of this rather ancient technology.

Anyway, the way it works is that you use said bucket, then free of the emergent need to use the toilet you shuffle down the hall bucket in hand and deposit the material when you get there. Now can I go back to watching MacGyver reruns? The original series, not this upstart reboot!

Your neighbor’s hay crop is ready to harvest. Everyone in their family is sick and their Combine is broken. How do you respond to this situation?

I can't imagine why I would live on or near a farm but here is what I would do. I would pay my neighbors for their hay and let my herds loose to graze. I figure between the guinea pigs, hamsters, goats, and chihuahuas they should have the fields cleared by planting time, right? Plus fertilizing it, which I wouldn't charge for...

PROMPT November 9th

You are having a very realistic dream. In this dream, you are approaching a castle. What unusual reason do you have to be at this castle? What do you say to the two guards standing outside it to gain entrance?

Raen approached the castle cautiously. They had been too careless. Raen knew this was a trap. She knew that going into the castle after Beaoul was a bad idea. She could simply stick the portal key into any lock on that world and get away clean. The problem was, Beaoul had given her the key, trusted her with it. It was their escape key. Raen felt compelled to go in and rescue her hellhound friend.

Anyone else in the omniverse might have trouble spitting out the thought, hellhound friend, but it was natural for Raen. Beaoul was her closest friend. Raen was pretty sure all of her childhood friends on Tradehub were dead. Beaoul had done her best to prevent Mira Black from spreading a deadly plague across that planet. That was how Raen had met Beaoul. Raen had accidentally gotten in the way of Beaoul's efforts. That was also how Raen ended up in Mira Black's sights.

Raen hadn't learned much about the mysteries of her origins since she started running with Beaoul, but what she did know about herself came directly from her relationship with the hellhound. So, there was a debt. And Raen doubted she would have half the success finding out about herself without her friend.

The castle was formidable. It was the only standing structure on a landscape of scorched earth. The metal skeletons of what once had to be beautiful airships were the only other outstanding objects on the surface. There was no cover and no doubt that the two guards at the castle gate had seen Raen some time ago.

Raen decided to throw all her cards down. She strode up the packed rubble of the road waving with both arms, "Gentlemen, I believe you are expecting me?"

The two guards stood at attention bringing their spears to the vertical position. "No, who do you think you are?"

Raen forced a chuckle, "I am here to pick up a friend! She has been enjoying your hospitality?" And quite possibly hospitalized or killed several of your fellow guards.

"This is not a hotel! This is a prison."

Okay, so these men, weren't well versed in irony, "She mentioned your facilities in her secret message. I am sure this is where she said she was residing."

"What message?"

"Uh, I said secret. If I told you two then it wouldn't be a secret!" Raen felt suddenly optimistic about her chances of getting to Beaoul and getting them both back out. By this time Raen was just a few feet from the guards. They still stood at attention, but no more than when she announced herself. "Here, let me show you." Raen produced a piece of paper folded into a makeshift envelope. Carefully, she unwrapped it. The two guards leaned in close to examine it. With their noses inches from the piece Raen exhaled deeply and held her breath. The powder stirred up by her breath found its way into the guards' airways and shortly they passed out, slamming into one another's helmeted heads.

Raen stepped over them and pressed her palm against the castle door. It opened. So much for security? This seemed too easy. Raen entered the castle on full alert, even the extra senses that Beaoul had just begun teaching to use. A few corridors in the chaos that assailed those senses nearly floored her. People were howling in pain and screaming. She could hear them running in fear. Then under it all, she heard, "Wait, come back! I haven't even scratched you yet!" Raen recognized the voice and chuckled. It shouted this way to Beaoul.

Raen raced through the corridors passing fleeing guards until she came upon a five-way intersection with Beaoul at its midpoint. The hellhound was bucking and clawing at the air trying to toss off a chainmail muzzle and two remaining chain mail mittens. The claws on her hind paws were free and fully extended. A few brave guards held positions a short distance down one of the corridors.

With a smile plastered across her face, Raen leaned up against one of the corners of the corridor. She waited for Beaoul to stop bucking and notice her. Beaoul kept at her energetic attempts to free her major weapons. "Hey, Beaoul, would you like some help?"

Beaoul stopped bucking with her back to Raen. She turned to face Raen, "I had this handled!"

"Clearly!"

"Get out of here she has reinforcements!" The lead guard of the remaining detail shouted and ran.

Beaoul looked over her shoulder at their fleeing backsides. "I know Mira likes sanruphrup as minions because they are so obedient, but they seem to lack intelligence too."

"Yeah, they should have run sooner. You had them outnumbered and outmaneuvered quite a while ago." Raen chuckled as she began unfastening and removing the restraint devices. "You know if I had known all you needed me to do was unbuckle a few straps I wouldn't have been in such a hurry."

"This was too easy, Raen use the key on that wall. I don't know if we have time to find a door," Beaoul whispered.

Raen nodded and focused her mind like Beaoul had taught her to. She pressed the tip of the pearlescent key into the wall. After a moment it gave way and Raen turned the key. A line of light outlining a virtual door cut its way through the stone and opened outward. Raen could hear an army's worth of feet marching towards them. "After you?" Raen pulled the key from the "lock" and they darted through the portal together, hopefully to safety.

What would you have to start doing now so that in 10 years you feel like you just had the best decade of your life?

Focus on getting my writing out to a wider audience. Advertising my finished works, working harder on my writer's platform. Facebook networking. Then the fun stuff too including writing at least a book a year.

Today's prompt is taken from a book I own. "Great Quotes From Great Leaders", published by Motorola, my employer. This one is from Norman Vincent Peale. "The trouble with most of us, is that we would rather be ruined by praise than saved by criticism." Do you feel this is a valid statement? Tell us why you feel the way you do.

Most people these days have little concept of how to handle criticism, even the constructive kind. They would rather accept and believe a lie as long as it strokes their egos. I have a hard time being critical of others because I can all to easily read into what they have written what they really meant to write and I see that effort not what made it to the page necessarily. I like to think I take criticism well compared to many. I accept even mean reviews with the knowledge that for someone to take the time to review something, I have to have made them feel something, even if they hated it.

You work alone from home, logged on to your work PC.
One day you log on, and start your routine. You look at the clock on your desktop and eight hours have passed, but you have no memory of getting any tasks done. Tell us what might have happened to you during those eight hours.

I check my files and logs and all the websites I should have visited and all the things that I should have done. Did I write two blog entries? And several poems? Did I log time on my internet games? My email shows I must have finished checking it about twenty minutes after I started... all my messages are time-stamped after that. I was very productive. Too productive, I must have been possessed by a mutant psycho muse! I hope I have it on speed dial....
