I know there's a lot going on this month, but this contest is still open:
Do you have something in your Port that fits this prompt? Or, write something up. There's still time ................. but it's moving fast. |
What does C.P.R. stand for? "Community Plug Reviewers" Who are they? They are anyone who wishes to earn a quick merit badge for posting a public review of any one item found on the "The Shameless "Plug" Page" . The (Quick) Rules Reviews should be 750 characters w/o WritingML (1500 characters to get credit for "Game of Thrones" ). Post the review link in a comment to this Newsfeed post. Contest will run until 11:59 pm, WDC time, on 10 April 2024. The Prize One Genre MB relating to the item reviewed will be given to one of every five reviews linked. (May only win one time.) I will be sole judge and jury (no executions allowed). ** THIS IS A VALID CONTEST, FOLKS. I WILL AWARD MBs FOR VALID REVIEWS.** |
Thought I'd move this a bit higher on the Newsfeed. The feed moves faster that printed newspapers headed toward being bundled for delivery. Consider entering. You have reviews to do anyway. Right? "Note: What does C.P.R. stand for? "C ommuni..." |
I've been a member of Writing.Com for more than 15 years now. I joined to be a writer--to improve that craft. Part of that journey led me to reviewing. And thus, I became a reader. There are literally thousands of thoughtful, funny, poignant, instructive, and just plain enjoyable stories and poems on this site. Here's a very small list of recent items I've read (and reviewed). I encourage you to check them out. "Password Emergency!" 13+: Passwords are taking over the world. "The Lost Memories of Mrs. Mathalda" E: An old witch attempts to save her memories before they leave. "Why I Love WdC" E: WdC Is My Classroom and My Playground "For all my golfer friends.." 13+: My girl told me it was about time that I learned to play golf. "A Lonely Life" 13+: A visit to my father teaches me the most important lesson of all "Writing Free Verse" E: Writing free verse is more than just writing thoughts If you're only here to write, you're missing out. Oh, and reading and reviewing WILL help improve your writing. |
I'm still collating the results of my survey: "The Newsfeed Survey" . Have been pretty busy with Game of Thrones. The survey was viewed by 73 members of which 24 responded. Results to come. |
A lot of contests across WDC close their doors at day's end. Today's the last day to mine:
I'm looking forward to reading the onslaught of later entries. |
Last weekend to take my Newsfeed Survey. I've had 22 participants to date. I'd like to see 30 takers. Consider responding to the survey as your daily Newsfeed comment -- just reply "Done." A link for your convenience:
Deadline 11:59 pm, 31 Mar (WDC time); results posted 1 Apr. |
Just a few more days left to take my Newsfeed survey. I'll post the results on April 1st. I've received only a dozen responses. I know you're out there--I can hear you breathing. It's only two questions and an (optional) comment. Check it out:

Only a week left to submit your entry for the March prompt. While this topic covers a lot of ground, I'm just looking for something short and sweet -- any article on one aspect of Item Types. And you can enter something previously written and awarded. How easy is that! |
I've received a number of responses, and some great comments with them, regarding my Newsfeed survey so far. I'll leave it up for the week, and will post the results then.
Take a moment to add yours. Thanks. |
I've just edited an item in my portfolio:
I'm curious. And you know what they say about curiosity ... create a Survey! |
Wow! This month is getting away from me. For a guy who's retired, my time has certainly not been my own. Anyway, regarding:
Congratulations to February's winner: 𝔹𝕝𝕦𝕖𝕪𝕖𝕫 with:
The March prompt is posted; check it out! |
I entered this item in a contest earlier this month. Then I thought 'This might be of interest to more folks.'
Do you think your friends might wonder if you suddenly disappeared from WDC? Would you want them to know what happened to you? Hmmm. |
On the same topic: a while back some of us wrote letters to our families as a contest entry for "The Whatever Contest -- Closed for Now" expressing our wishes for a copy of a death certificate to be sent to SM so that our ports can be memorialized when we die. Schnujo is Late to Lannister did a good job setting this up. Take a look at prompt three. (It's still up even though the contest has been closed for a while.) |
𝔹𝕝𝕦𝕖𝕪𝕖𝕫 - Thanks for pointing me to that. Sounds like a great idea. I'm not sure how I missed that contest. |
Apparently, that's the last round I did of "The Whatever Contest -- Closed for Now" . I knew I didn't hide the last prompts, but I'm glad they're more useful prompts than the ones about the war between unicorns and mermaids. Thank you for sharing this important topic, 𝔹𝕝𝕦𝕖𝕪𝕖𝕫 and JACE - House Targaryen! |
We have been provided six different fonts and eight different sizes of each to assist with creating items on WDC. Many of us know the sizes as defined on WDC do not correlate to the sizes in word-processing programs like MS-Word. In response to a "Non-Technical Support Forum" post, "Best font and size for articles" , I decided to do a pretty subjective experiment comparing the various sizes of MS-Word 365 font Verdana with the different sizes of WDC Verdana. The results are here:
If anyone has any way of making my test more accurate, please advise. |
The StoryMistress - I believe I saw a post by The StoryMaster within the past few weeks stating that (my words/understanding of what I remember) text sizes are set up the way they are to rein in the sizes of posts and the memory (?) they take up on the site's servers (maybe?). Stacking text sizes is, as I understood his post, basically cheating the system he set up. I could go back and find his post in his notebook, but I have a feeling he might be chiming in. I don't claim to never have stacked text sizes, usually it's with the smaller fonts like comic. But since SM's message, I've paid a lot more attention to when I'm tempted to do so, and I've tried to put one or two words in all caps or use colors or highlighting instead of increasing the size. (Sorry.) |
Mender_Eon - Possibly due to using a different printer.... buddhangela's Psychotic Break - I agree. I seem to recall such a post from The StoryMaster . But I only did my test on the normal site fonts and sizes. I didn't intend for folks to super-size their items. |
Just a little under three days left to enter. Check it out and give 𝔹𝕝𝕦𝕖𝕪𝕖𝕫 a little competition. Didn't you state in your "Dear Me" letter this year that you wanted to enter more contests? This is the one. Don't you have something to write for this week's entry for "I Write in 2024" ? This is the one. I look forward to reading your entries. |
