I like this a lot, it is dark and ultimately hopeless. This style of dark writing is close to my heart as it is how much of own writing is. I love the concept of the story beginning with a question springing out of the blue. It instantly grabbed my attention and sets the scene for the rest of the book.

My one suggestion would be that there is so much scope to build on this story and keep the reader wondering that it could easily be expanded into a longer story. But this is another complement and not a criticism. Well done, great writing.
