I am an adjunct professor of English, and many times I have taught the western literary tradition - Gilgamesh, Homer, Beowulf, Don Quixote, etc. Actually, for time's sake, we read The Aenied since I see it as such an awesome culmination of the Illiad and other stories.
Anyway, the reason I bring this up is because reading this, for me, was an incredible tribute to the very beginnings of literature. It really has the aura of something that could have been written centuries ago, but there is still that modern, relatable twist with the phrasing on the stones. That is impressive and not easy to do. Excellent work, looking forward to reading more.
Wow! I don't know where to start. This was absolutely haunting and beautiful. Personally, I did not get the sense of any morbidity in this which was the best part. The wording, imagery, the line breaks, the mantra - it was all ethereal and calming which is hard to do in a death poem. Too often, death poems get too dark and morbid, even cliche, but this did not do any of those things. Well penned. Looking forward to reading more.
Ok, I have to admit, one of the things that drew me into reading your work is that your screen name is Wolf_Song. I am obsessed with wolves.
Anyway, there is so much gorgeous simplicity to this poem and the images are vibrant which is an interesting approach on what I assume is insomnia, which can be anything but beautiful or simple. You really get a sense of the trance-like, dizzying experience of your body being tired but your mind being wide awake. At least that is how I took it. Well penned :)
I really like how you presented some very real imagery throughout, especially with the part where you were waiting for the maintenance guy so you could get into your room. It's a great foreshadowing to what I assume will involve the affects of your illness on your mental health. Good read. :)
