This is a great story and I admire the allusion (which I didn't realize was such until the last few sentences, where it finally sparked). The back story of the former-priest is interesting in that there may be more to investigate (his demeanor in the days/weeks/months before he left), bringing his "fully-realized" self in connection with his prior, more orthodox way of worship. The relation between the two characters was delightfully contrasting. Peter's desperation was palpable as was the solidity of the elderly man's wisdom. Overall, great job.
